Flea Treatments

What are Fleas?

Fleas are parasitic six-legged insects that feed on the blood of their hosts. Their bodies are made for jumping and their compressed shape means that it's also easy for them to run through the hair of your pet. Although there are many different species of fleas, the most common one is Ctenocephalides felis, a cat flea that actually prefers dogs.

It’s a sobering thought that for every flea on your dog or cat there are probably at least nine more in your home. Adult fleas lay eggs which hatch into larvae and get everywhere – in carpets, between floorboards, in upholstery and in your pet’s bedding.

Fleas thrive in warm, humid conditions at low altitudes. A female flea requires a "blood meal" in order to lay her eggs. Their droppings, the reddish-brown "flea dirt" that you see on your pet, is actually what larvae need to feed on to live
Fleas are extremely hard to completely eradicate from your home once a infestation has set in. You might think you’ve beaten your pet’s fleas, only to find a new generation emerging days to weeks after you’ve started treating your pet. This can be triggered by a change in temperature, for instance when you turn the central heating up or the warm weather finally arrives.

To avoid such a nasty surprise, use a spot-on flea product that will kill fleas, monthly to break the flea life cycle. This not only kills adult fleas and immature fleas in your pet’s immediate surroundings but also makes sure that any newly hatched adult fleas that do jump onto your pet won’t last long. Unfortunately there is nothing available thus far that will successfully kill flea eggs, although many products claim to do so!
Treat every pet in your household at the same time to make sure you tackle this problem effectively.
It is a common misconception that fleas cannot live on human blood and need an animal to survive. The truth of the matter is although fleas to not like human blood, they are more than capable of living and in doing so, breeding on it until a suitable animal can be found to feed upon. Where survival is concerned, food is food and beggars cannot be choosers!

PRICES

We charge a flat rate of £70 for the whole property (as fleas will travel around the house to find food and do not live solely within carpeted areas) up to 2 bedroom size and £85 up to 4 bedroom size. As there is currently no way to destroy flea eggs, a re spray is suggested to ensure the life cycle and thus the infestation is broken. If a re spray is completed between 10-12 days after the initial spray has taken place we will charge only half price for this service. For very heavy infestations a second re spray may be required however this is very rare.
